Child and Youth Care: Foundations Course


The Alaska Afterschool Network is partnering with the Academy for Competent Youth Work to provide the Child and Youth Care (CYC) credential training for FREE to licensed school-age childcare providers and afterschool educators working in the Municipality of Anchorage.

The Child & Youth Care: Foundations course introduces practitioners to basic concepts and skills in professional child and youth work. The course provides knowledge and skills important to employment in any youth work profession including afterschool, early childhood, K-12 education, foster parenting, residential care, mental health, transitional living, recreation, juvenile justice, and community youth services.

Intended Audience:  Licensed before and afterschool, summer, and expanded learning educators working in the Municipality of Anchorage. 

Course Expectations

Participants must be able to complete prework, in-between class activities, attend all in-person training sessions, and complete the certification exam. Participants can be eligible for:

  • $500 course completion stipend

  • $500 credential completion stipend

  • Two non-degree seeking credits from University of Alaska-Anchorage (UAA) 

  • SEED travel reimbursement 

Training Location & Time: 

Camp Fire Alaska, 161 Klevin St, #100, Anchorage AK

Week 1:

  • June 17-21 (no class June 19) - 9:00am-2:00pm (Lunch provided daily)

Week 2: 

  • June 24-28 9:00am - 2:00pm (Lunch provided daily)

Certification Exam:
Participants will need to register for a three hour testing block during one of the scheduled testing days.
July 1, 2024, 10:00am - 1:00pm OR July 2, 2024, 10:00am - 1:00pm
